Norbert of Xanten, Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1126 to 1134, founded an order whose history continues to this day. In the first unique exhibition on the Premonstratensians, outstanding works of art from the Middle Ages to modern times illustrated the cultural, spiritual and economic work of the Premonstratensian order founded in Premontré from its origins to the present day. On display were 160 exhibits from major museums and libraries such as the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels, the Dresden State Art Collections and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt/Main. Numerous monasteries also opened their treasure chambers. A work by Peter Paul Rubens was also shown in Magdeburg for the first time: a preliminary study for an altarpiece of St Norbert.
