Open today from 10 - 18
Kulturhistorisches Museum Magdeburg

Content: Students take an imaginary journey through time by learning about education in the German Imperial Era in the permanent exhibition “A (hi-)story of schools”. One focus is on an arithmetic aid that was popular at the time – the abacus. Together, students try out the abacus and learn about its origin. Afterwards, we talk about education in the Inca Empire, the conquest of the Inca Empire by the Spanish and how it has shaped the education of people in Peru (South America) to this day. Various teaching aids are explained. The focus is on a popular Inca calculating tool, the yupana. Participants design their own yupana to take home.

With a lot of everyday relevance and practical activities, students approach age-appropriate topics of global learning such as equal, inclusive and high-quality education. In addition, they strengthen their empathy and ability to act in global contexts.

Time: The programme can be completed in one day at the museum (4 hours plus a break). If you would prefer a different schedule, for example, two consecutive days, please get in touch.

Grade level: Suitable for grades 5-8 (by arrangement, primary school and higher grades)

Subjects: Geography, mathematics, interdisciplinary – education for sustainable development/global learning

Guest speaker: Susana Fernández de Friboese (Education Officer for Global Learning)
