School in the Past
Daycare, preschoolers, grade 1
After a shadow play about the Rabbit School, see how children used to learn in school in our historical classroom. Try your hands at writing and painting on slate tablets.
1 hour, group price 15 euros
Grade 2 and up, special school
What was it like for our great-great-grandparents in the classroom over 120 years ago? What equipment was used in classes back then? The museum’s educational programme addresses these and other questions in a fun way. In addition to a short tour of the permanent exhibition “School (Hi)-stories”, participants try out what classes were like in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Take a look at the strict school rules and write in the old Sütterlin script (depending on the class level, only on the slate or also with pen and ink).
1.5 hours, group price 15 euros
Grade 5 and up
We prepare for the historical lesson with a short tour. Then participants experience a historical lesson in the style of the imperial era, which is characterised by strict teacher-centred teaching. In the 1920s, criticism of this form of teaching led to the emergence of progressive educational ideas. In particular, the progressive educationalist Berthold Otto was influential in Magdeburg. Therefore, participants get to experience the total teaching method according to Berthold Otto, in which the students are allowed to determine the topics. Afterwards, we talk about our experiences with the two teaching methods and discuss how we would like our school to be in the future.

Loan of museum case, deposit 25 euros Almost everyone has had the experience of going to school. Often, attending school has left lasting impressions. Seeing, feeling and experiencing things from school activates and invites exchange. We therefore offer guided tours for people with dementia in the museum or lend a museum case to your institution. The guided tours in the museum are conducted by a certified cultural companion for people with dementia (Dr Juliane Lippok).
