End of exhibition:
20. January 2019
The interest in news, current political information, but also in games and entertaining picture stories has always been great. Picture sheets - coloured lithographs printed with one or more pictures, often with text - met the need for information, entertainment and instruction. They were extremely popular in the 19th century and distributed as mass-produced items throughout Europe. Today, many of these individual sheets are coveted collector's items.
Over 70 illustrated sheets from various printers and publishers were presented in the exhibition. The Magdeburg printing company Robrahn & Co. played a special role, being presented to the public for the first time. Loans from Berlin, Halle and Leipzig as well as from private collectors - never before presented in Magdeburg - provided important evidence of the hitherto unknown history of the printing company, which was one of the most important producers of illustrated sheets with supra-regional operations.
A comprehensive catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition and is available in the museum shop.
